Intertek helps manufacturers and product teams reduce risk and demonstrate compliance with functional safety standards. Intertek offers consulting, testing, certification, and training backed by accredited labs to reduce risk and optimize your systems.

Intertek Functional Safety Mark

The Functional Safety Mark (FS Mark) is a formal, third-party Functional Safety Certification program that evaluates products, systems, and processes against internationally recognized Functional Safety Standards.

Intertek’s FS Mark is an ISO 17065 accredited certification scheme that gives customers a fast, credible signal that your product’s functional safety capability has been independently certified.  Backed by documented evidence, controlled decision making and auditable design process.  The FS Mark allows integrators and regulators to verify and trust your Functional Safety claims.

Why does an accredited FS Mark matter?

Accreditation elevates confidence since it’s not just a technical review, it’s a conformity assessment scheme with defined rules for:

  • Impartiality (independent certification decision, conflict of interest measure are in place)
  • Competence (Qualified personnel, controlled methods)
  • Consistency (repeatable process and decision rules)
  • Ongoing certification (surveillance, change control and certificate maintenance)

What are the benefits of Intertek’s FS Mark?

  • Shortens certification projects: FS Marked products can be quickly integrated and verified for use in safety critical systems.  They save your customers time and money by shortening their certification cycle.
  • Your Functional Safety claims are supported and easily defended.
  • Build customer confidence. Your customers know that you are following a defined development and testing process that ensures higher quality and confidence in your process and product.

What are the deliverables with Intertek’s FS Mark?

A certification mark is only as valuable as the evidence behind it.  Typical deliverables include the following:

  • Certificate stating the scope, applicable standards, certified configuration and conditions of validity
  • Technical Report packet which provides detailed evidence of the independent third-party review.
  • Permission to apply Intertek’s FS Mark, defining permitted use, reproduction and prohibited claims.

What does a FS Mark evaluation typically consist of?

  • Discovery call (30–45 min): identify scope, applicable standards, timelines
  • Proposal: tasks, deliverables, schedule, assumptions
  • Execution: Review of safety manual and safety functions, review of development documents, review of validation and verification testing.  Fault and EMC testing as necessary.
  • Closeout: Final Assessment and deliverables

Standards & Methods

We offer services to support widely accepted standards and methods, including:

  • IEC 61508 (Functional safety of E/E/PE safety-related systems)
IEC 61508 defines the overall framework for achieving functional safety in systems that rely on electrical, electronic, or programmable electronic technologies. It applies to safety‑related systems across all industries, serving as the foundational standard for sector‑specific functional safety requirements.
  • ISO 13849 / IEC 62061 (Safety of machinery—safety-related control systems)
These standards outline requirements for designing and evaluating safety‑related control systems used in machinery to reduce risks to acceptable levels. They apply to machine builders and system integrators developing or assessing safety controls such as emergency stops, interlocks, guards, and other protective functions.
  • IEC 62304 (Medical device software life‑cycle processes)
IEC 62304 establishes the framework for developing and maintaining safe, reliable software used in medical devices. It applies to all medical device software—both standalone applications and software embedded within medical equipment.
  • IEC 60730 (Automatic electrical controls)
IEC 60730 defines safety requirements for automatic electrical control devices used in household and similar equipment. It applies to control mechanisms such as thermostats, timers, switches, and sensors used in appliances, HVAC systems, and other automated consumer and industrial products.
  • IEC 61511 (Process industry sector)
IEC 61511 provides functional safety requirements for safety instrumented systems (SIS) used to reduce risks in process industry operations. It applies to chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, and other process facilities that rely on automated safety systems to prevent hazardous events.
  • And more related to risk analysis (FMEA, FMEDA), SIL/PL determination, validation protocols.

Yes. We help determine the most appropriate framework based on your product type, industry expectations, customer requirements, and the intended safety functions, then we align the lifecycle activities and deliverables according to that framework.

No, Certification does not replace application-specific risk assessment, system integration analysis or validation. It confirms conformity with the agreed upon scope and configuration.

Clients with certified products are expected to notify Intertek of any changes that could impact the functional safety certification. Intertek will evaluate the change and determine the impact to the original certification. Often a brief review and re-assessment of the change will be enough to provide continued product certification.

Yes. Under documented mark usage rules which will be provided. These rules define permitted use, required context and prohibited claims to protect credibility.

It depends on scope and maturity. A focused certification with a well-prepared submittal package can be as short as 2 months. For first-time customers, generating the submittal package can be overwhelming and take a great deal of time. We offer consulting services to assist with this part of the Functional Safety process. If your company is new to the Functional Safety requirements, we highly suggest early engagement, in the form of an assurance project or a gap analysis to determine any gaps in your development process. It is considerably easier to address these requirements at the beginning of the design phase instead of waiting until you are nearing release. Waiting for a review often leads to re-work and testing.

Early engagement allows for a major reduction in late-stage rework by establishing safety requirements and interfaces early.

  • Reduce certification review cycles by ~ 30%
  • Avoid costly rework by identifying critical safety requirement gaps before the design is finalized
  • Prevent delays caused by non-compliant or incomplete lifecycle activities.

We support a broad range including industrial automation, machinery/robotics, material handling, energy and embedded control products.

Yes. We offer role-based training and coaching aligned to the standards you’re working under, focused on practical application and usable templates.
